Sign Language For Babies

It may surprise you to learn that many babies are able to learn sign language. In fact, it can be easier for them to communicate that way because they haven’t the ability to form many words yet. Parents that do teach their babies sign language may find that they are better able to care for their little ones. They will have a way to communicate that isn’t always possible with those that are so very young.

There are a variety of different signs that babies can learn. By being able to use them they can tell you when they are hungry or thirsty, tired, need their blanket, or they don’t feel well. Time can be wasted trying to guess what your baby needs so teaching them sign language will help to make sure they are kept content on a regular basis. Most parents find this also serves to reduce their own anxiety.

Many of the crying fits that babies enter into are the result of their own frustration. They may be trying to tell you they are hungry when you assume they need a nap. When you can remove such barriers from the relationship you will find that your baby is more confident as well. Most professionals agree that teaching baby’s sign language is very beneficial. They can also continue that experience as they get older.

It is important to always remember babies are people too. They have thoughts and feelings that need to be explored. They need to be able to express those thoughts and feelings to you as well. There have been plenty of studies that show babies with sign language skills also have better fine motor skills. They tend to have fewer learning disabilities as they get older too.

You do need to be very patient when teaching sign language to babies. They don’t have a very long attention span. They also need plenty of time to make the connection between a word and the meaning of it. Repeating the word and signing it at the same time will help them to make that connection though. It will also make learning fun for them. Don’t offer too many new signs at one time though. You need to help them to fully understand a few of them at a time.
